Development Canceled
I posted this on the community discord, but wanted to update anybody finding the game here:
Hey guys, this update has been a long time coming (because I wanted to be very sure) but with the way my life is right now I won't be able to work on Vapor Trails at its current scope any more. I did the bulk of the work when I was living with my parents during the pandemic in 2020-2023, and now that I have a place of my own, a girlfriend, and a social life, I don't spend as much time devving.
I think the amount of effort I put in before was partly a way to cope with being stuck in my childhood bedroom and needing a way to feel like it was worthwhile somehow. I'm glad something good came of it, even though it was a half-finished game, but I'm also glad I'm not in that situation any more. I really owe a lot to everyone here for finding bugs and speedrunning and just talking about the game, and I feel like I'm letting you all down in some way, but I truly don't think going back to the life of a hermit is worth it. I hope you all understand.
I'm still gonna be making small things here and there, but nothing on the scale of VT.

you do you! but does it have to be all or nothing? I.e. you couldn't just do 30 minutes a day, 5x a week? Or is it just not something you care about anymore?
nah, the scope is too big. if I did that I wouldn't finish it before I retired. I care about it a lot but it's just too much asset creation work to tell the story I'd want to tell. It's ok, though, I have other projects...
It's sad to hear but I'm glad you're focusing on your life more. Cheers :)
Seems fair. I do hope you keep the dev files backed up, though, or even release them as-is - the previews we've gotten are pretty cool, and would be neat to see finished up someday. Maybe someone else could pick them up, or you could find yourself with a bunch of spare time one summer a decade from now? Even if you don't, properly mothballing projects you don't think you'll pick up again does let you self-plagarize more easily for other work.
Best of luck with your grownup life!
The files are open-source actually! You can find them on my github. I think the Discord community has poked at them a bit, but I was way too ambitious and the code is kinda bad.
I've also ripped some code for my next project, that car game.
You hate to see it!
Nah, but I'm glad you're focusing on your personal life. Game dev is a grind, and you've grinded hard enough to get this far.
Yeah, life do be like that
I used to hate the feeling of abandoning personal projects, and I still dislike it, but you learn to see the good that comes out of it.
Car game looks dope though
